What is Cold Pressed Neem Oil

Sponsored By: Terramera

In the realm of sustainable agriculture, the demand for effective and eco-friendly solutions to protect crops from pests and diseases has grown significantly. Neem oil is a complex compound containing over 150 biologically active compounds better known as limonoids, it has emerged as a potent natural tool in promoting crop health and productivity. This remarkable oil not only offers protection against various pests but also boasts numerous benefits for the overall well-being of plants and the environment. Some key limonoids that are highly active are Azadirachtin, salannin, meliantriol, nimbin, nimbidin, nimbinin, & nimbolides. These active compounds allow neem oil to possess multiple modes of action, including Antifeedant, Insect Growth Regulator, Insect Repellency, Molting Disruptor, and Fungal Growth Inhibitor. At Terramera, they use their own proprietary testing to ensure the presents of key limonoids in every jug resulting in a broad-spectrum fungicide, insecticide, and miticide.

Neem oil extraction – Cold Pressed is Best

Neem oil is extracted from the neem seeds as the seeds have the highest concentration of insecticidal and fungicidal compounds. There are 3 ways of extraction, solvent, heat, and cold-pressing. The solvent and heat extraction methods separate the compounds based on solubilities into two different immiscible liquids. This uses synthetic chemical solvents to extract the oil from the neem seed kernel. Solvent and heat extraction processes compromise the limonoids resulting in variability and loss of certain limonoid levels during the extraction process. Clarified Hydrophobic neem oil is derived from a solvent extraction process. The Azadirachtin is separated off for use in the production of products that only contain azadirachtin. The remaining oil which is largely azadirachtin free is what is referred to as Oil of Margosa or Hydrophobic clarified neem. RANGO® & SOCORO® is an example of cold-pressed neem oil. This is a mechanical process where the de-pulped kernels are crushed and squeezed. Since there is no heat generated and there are no solvents used in this extraction, this allows the oil to maintain its natural profile which contains 150+ Limonoids including azadirachtin.

Natural Insect Control:

Cold-pressed neem oil has gained widespread recognition as a natural alternative to synthetic pesticides. It contains a multitude of biologically active compounds, notably azadirachtin, nimbin, and salannin, which exhibit powerful insecticidal properties. When sprayed on crops, cold-pressed neem oil acts as a repellant, antifeedant and molting disruptor and insect growth regulator, including aphids, worms, mites, thrips, and whiteflies.

Fungal Disease Management:

Crop diseases caused by fungi pose a significant threat to agricultural productivity. Cold-pressed neem oil exhibits remarkable antifungal properties, making it an invaluable tool for disease management. The oil’s active compounds have been shown to inhibit the growth and reproduction of numerous fungal pathogens, including downy and powdery mildew, botrytis, rust, and leaf spot diseases. By applying neem oil, farmers can effectively control these fungal infections, reducing yield losses and the need for chemical fungicides that can harm the environment and human health.

Environmental Sustainability:

The utilization of cold-pressed neem oil in crop production aligns with sustainable farming practices. As a natural and biodegradable product, cold-pressed neem oil minimizes environmental pollution and reduces the risks associated with chemical residues in food and water sources. It is considered safe for humans, animals, and beneficial insects when used as directed. Furthermore, neem trees are well-suited to arid and semiarid regions, where they can be cultivated as a sustainable source of neem oil, contributing to rural livelihoods and reforestation efforts.

Conclusion:

By harnessing the power of neem oil, we can protect crops, increase yields, and cultivate a more sustainable and resilient agricultural system for the benefit of farmers, consumers, and the planet as a whole.
